59-year-old man infected with coronavirus which has killed 46 people since September, mostly in Saudi Arabia.

Health authorities in Qatar have announced the first case of MERS coronavirus in the Gulf state, with a 59-year-old man infected.

The patient, a Qatari, was in stable condition, they said on Tuesday. Another Qatari with the infection died in a London hospital on June 28.

The virus has killed 46 people worldwide since September, 39 of them in Saudi Arabia, which neighbours Qatar.

MERS is considered a cousin of the SARS virus that erupted in Asia in 2003 and infected 8,273 people, nine percent of whom died.

Like SARS, it is thought to have jumped from animals to humans, and shares the former's flu-like symptoms, but differs by causing kidney failure.

Researchers have pointed to the Arabian, or dromedary, camel as a possible host of the virus.

Scientists studying the new virus have found older patients, men and people with underlying medical conditions are those particularly at risk.

The Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Qatar Organ Donation Center will participate in the 16th Congress of the European Society for Organ Transplantation, scheduled to take place in Vienna from September 8 to 11.

Head of the Qatar Organ Donation Center, Dr Yousef Al Maslamani, will present a study entitled ‘Organ donations from brain dead donors: Challenges and prospects.’ The study details HMC’s experience with both retrieving organs from brain dead donors and success of transplanting these organs.

Diseases associated with the failure of one of the body’s organs, such as kidney failure, are being more commonly diagnosed as a result of the increasing incidence of diabetes, hypertension and obesity. Organ transplantation is considered the best treatment for kidney and liver failure and corneal damage.

“HMC has been successfully performing transplant surgeries for a number of years with organs retrieved from both living donors and brain dead donors, after legal consent from the families have been received,” said Dr Al Maslamani.

Dr Al Maslamani said HMC is planning to use the study to develop the objectives for the Qatar Organ Donation Center and to find solutions to the challenges that face organ donation and transplant operations.

The study demonstrates the process of how potential brain dead organ donor candidates are identified and reveals the number of transplants carried out at HMC using organs received from brain dead donors. QNA

Qatar sends second LNG cargo to Egypt (no replies)

Qatar has sent its second tanker this month of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Egypt, struggling to cover its energy needs even before the removal of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi unleashed deadly violence.

Qatar's state news agency said late on Monday the tanker left Ras Laffan terminal on August 9, a week after the first cargo, part of an agreement made with Mursi and his Muslim Brotherhood government, which were backed by Doha.

Doha agreed in June to supply Egypt, which suffers frequent power cuts, with five shipments to cover some of its needs, which increase during the hot summer.

The total amount agreed has not been revealed, but traders say the shipments will only cover some of the gap in supply to Egypt, which has borrowed billions of dollars from abroad and delayed payments to oil companies and other suppliers.

The latest delivery seems to confirm that Qatar will honour the deal despite the army's removal of Mursi after mass protests and the resulting violence which has killed almost 900 people.

The Qatari foreign ministry has asked for the release of jailed Muslim Brotherhood leaders and condemned the Egyptian security forces' clearing of two pro-Mursi sit-ins last week.

The five shipments will probably be signed over to foreign partners at the Egyptian LNG Idku export plant, GDF Suez and BG Group, after Egypt failed to meet all their needs with domestic gas.

The cargoes from Qatar will help Egypt meet demand for its exports, helping Cairo channel more gas to the domestic market.

LNG producer Egypt has curbed exports in recent years due to supply shortages and growing domestic needs.

Mosharraf Hossain, Bangladesh left-arm spinner and Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) side Dhaka Gladiator’s member has refused the charges placed against him by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for being involved in alleged match-fixing.

He claimed that his bowling figures from the match are enough evidence to prove his innocence. He was speaking at a press conference at the Mirpur City Club Ground.

“The ICC has accused me on charges of match fixing in the game between Dhaka Gladiators and Chittagong despite doing well,” said Mosharraf.

He said: “I am shocked because I thought my performance in that game was good – I think you’ll agree if you look at the scorecard in that game. I think I am a victim of the situation and will put up a legal fight to prove that I am not guilty.”

“I had picked up two wickets for 17 runs in that game. It seems that I am a victim of situation and decided to take the recourse of law to prove my innocence and I am confident about it,” he added.

“I am disappointed to be honest because have been performing in the domestic cricket for like 10 years now. Last season I took more than 100 wickets, had a fair impression in the national conditioning camp. Such news while going through a good time is really disappointing.” Mosharraf said.

Gladiators had won five out of six games before February 2, and many Bangladeshi newspapers had raised suspicions after the match in which Dhaka Gladiators lost to Chittagong Kings by 54 runs.

Nine individuals received charge letters from ICC Anti-Corruption and Security Unit ,seven for match-fixing and two for not reporting corrupt approaches made to them.

Robin van Persie held down Lionel Messi, the last year’s winner to win player of the week honors in The Associated Press global soccer poll first round and Barcelona finished at the top of the team voting.

Both players scored twice. But Robin Van Persie’s acrobatic volley and long-range goal in Manchester United’s 4-1 win against Swansea in the Premier League gave the Dutchman the edge over Messi by five points.

“Van Persie’s goals were outstanding and broke open a tight game that wasn’t always going Man United’s way in the early going. The only reason I put him ahead of Messi was that he did it against better competition,” said panelist Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post.

“Six of their seven goals came in a scintillating first half display. The scary thing for the rest of La Liga is that new Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino thinks they can still improve,” said Paris-based soccer writer Mark Rodden.

United is in second position and Juventus is in third. Chelsea finished fourth and French club Monaco is in fifth.

Forward Emmanuel Riviere finished third in the player rankings and he came 46 points above Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas who is in fourth.

Arsenal could miss out on another transfer target as Paris Saint-Germain are preparing an offer to sign Yohan Cabaye, Newcastle’s midfielder.

The wealthy French club may be making an offer of £20m for Yohan Cabaye. Arsenal tabled a £12m bid on Sunday for the cultured midfielder. It’s rumoured that a delegation from Newcastle flew to Paris on yesterday to meet Cabaye’s agent and PSG officials.

After Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to Aston Villa, Wenger is under pressure from the supporters to spend and to miss out again would be a bitter blow to them. Wenger has missed out on several players during the summer transfer window, with the likes of Gonzalo Higuain signing for Napoli and Luiz Gustavo moving to Wolsfburg.

Mike Ashley, Newcastle chairman and Alan Pardew, manager angered by the timing of Arsenal’s approach and their valuation, are virtually resigned to losing the France star.

Several reports suggest Cabaye is keen on a move to Arsenal after not featuring in the 4-0 defeat to Manchester City on Monday night.

Cabaye is one of five players Newcastle fought to keep 12 months ago following their Europa League qualification and is departure would be a blow. But sale of Cabaye could help the club, who has again faced criticism over their lack of transfer acitivity.

Corniche road improvement work to be over ‘by November’ (no replies)

The Corniche road work is going on in full swing and Ashghal is doing its best to complete the entire project by November as originally planned, an official said yesterday.

As the summer vacation is coming to an end and the schools are set to start the new academic session early September, many residents fear there could be a big traffic jams as the Corniche road is partially closed for renovation.

At present the road is operational only on two lanes each side as work is going on to convert many of the roundabouts into signals.

Three companies entrusted with the job are working round the clock.

“While the roundabouts are being converted into traffic signals, the asphalt layers on the road are replaced with better quality ones,” the official said.

“Moreover, the road will be equipped with smart transportation systems such as better cameras and other solutions to ensure safety for drivers and pedestrians,” he explained.

Drainage and water pipes will also be replaced. The official admitted that as there were only two lanes operational now, the public might face some difficulties.

“The work was undertaken in mid July considering the fact that a large number of residents had travelled out of the country. Though there would be some difficulties for traffic for now, we are confident of completing the work on time,” he
said.

Clear directions are displayed at different places of the Corniche which would help the public to reach their destination without any confusion, the official added.

Few customers at Barwa Village shops (no replies)

Many shopkeepers in Barwa Village in Al Wakra are using the shops as a back office or warehouse due to lack of business.

They complain that they get customers “very rarely” even three years after the shopping complex was opened.

Some claim that even people residing in the residential cum shopping complex don’t shop within and only some popular stores and restaurants attract customers.

The complex with 950 shops opened at the end of 2010 and rent for each shop in Barwa Village is QR10,700. Many shops were seen closed and few customers were in the Barwa Village yesterday afternoon.

“We are not any more using this as a retail shop, we keep the goods here and deliver when ever it’s required by customers or other shops we have in Doha,” said a building material shopkeeper.

Another shop owner selling curtains said, “We are here for eight months but use this as a back office because many people don’t come to shop here.”

There are some others also looking to convert their shops as warehouses.

“We are here for two years; business has not improved and can’t continue like this, so planning to use this as storage,” said a bookshop owner.

Others say that they are facing huge loses as they have no other option and can’t afford to close the business too.

“People who have several shops are taking alternative steps. Each month we bear around QR60,000 to pay the rent, salaries and other expenses,” said a hardware shop owner, looking for a suitable place to shift his business.

Some shopkeepers have left the complex and new tenets have moved in. Mowasalat bus service is available to Barwa Village from Al Wakra and Mesaieed. However the place remains unpopular.

“Shopkeepers come and go, some are kept closed even though they have been taken for rent. Majority of us have no business, people don’t come here, even if they come it’s only to the restaurants and some popular stores,” said a cosmetic shop owner who has shifted from Souq Falah. The Barwa Village last year held a huge business promotion through a shopping festival to attract customers into the complex.

However, shopkeepers say that the promotion attracted people but not customers.

“Many people came for that event but they didn’t become customers of Barwa Village. May be some of them go to few shops but not to every shop and bring business,” said a shop owner selling clothes.

Qatar calls on Arabs to back West on Syria (no replies)

Qatar yesterday called on the Arab world to rally behind the international community to rescue the Syrian people, since the Syrian regime has crossed all limits with the use of chemical weapons against the civilians.

Addressing an extraordinary meeting of the Arab League representatives in Cairo, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the League, Ambassador Saif Mukadam Al Buainain, said the Syrian regime has crossed the red line and is fully responsible for the consequences.

“The use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime is against values, traditions and international law,” Al Buainain told the meeting dedicated to the Syrian issue. He called on the UN Security Council to act responsibly, protect the Syrian people and bring those who committed the crime to justice.

“We have been looking for a solution to the Syrian crisis over the past three years… By using chemical weapons, the Syrian regime has crossed the red line. Therefore, it is necessary to take quick practical action to stop this crime with Arab support to any international movement to save the Syrians,” he said.

The meeting made it clear that sessions would be open to the media so that the Arab public can know each member country’s stance on Syria. In a statement after the meeting, the League said those behind the chemical attack should face international justice, and called on UN Security Council members to overcome their differences and take action to end the killing there.

In Riyadh, Saudi Foreign Minister Saud Al Faisal said the international community must take a “decisive and serious” stand against the government of President Bashar Al Assad.

Meanwhile, US forces readied to strike Syria, as the West insisted its goal was not regime change but to punish the government for unleashing chemical warfare on civilians.

With military action seen as a near certainty and expected within days, Syria vowed to defend itself with what it dubbed “surprise” measures, while Russia and Iran warned that the use of force would have dire consequences.

US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel said the US military was prepared to act if President Barack Obama gave the order — though White House aides said no final decision had been taken.

The White House said any US action would be to defend the principle that chemical weapons should not be used — and would not aim to topple Assad, despite previous calls for him to go.

Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has announced the successful completion and testing of Qatar’s first substation at Msheireb Downtown.

The 66 kilovolt (kV) substation is the first energised underground substation in Qatar.

The substation was jointly designed and developed by Msheireb Properties and Kahramaa.

With the latter providing internal design and electrical plans, the substation is connected to the Ras Abu Aboud super substation to ensure a reliable supply of electricity throughout the Msheireb project master plan while minimising any environmental impact.

Mohamed Al Dosari, Manager of Electricity Projects from Kahramaa, said: “We are proud to have reached this milestone in the development of our country’s power infrastructure by introducing the first underground substation design, in line with the sustainable ethos of Msheireb Downtown Doha.”

“This ground-breaking technology will deliver efficient, cost-effective energy throughout Msheireb Downtown Doha in the most environmentally responsible manner. We are delighted to have achieved this technological milestone in Qatar and believe the Msheireb project to be the perfect fit for such pioneering infrastructure,” Al Dosari said.

Mohammed Masoud Al Marri, Chief Officer Design and Delivery at Msheireb Properties, said: “We are proud to have Doha’s first 66kV substation on the site of Msheireb Properties’ signature development. The environmental considerations of the substation represent another breakthrough for the Msheireb Downtown Doha project team and underscore our long-term commitment to sustainable development and industry best practice.”

The substation is located in the Phase-1A of the Msheireb master plan.

An underground location was chosen to preserve the traditional character of the project’s distinctive design and to maximise the amount of green space open to the public.

Aside from two primary 66kV substations, the project will also house forty 11kV stations, all of which will be located underground.

“Space and design were key considerations,” said Al Marri.

“Having the substation below ground was the most creative solution to avoid disturbing the existing heritage sites within the Msheireb Downtown project and to make the best use of natural light and ventilation, as well as technologies promoting electricity and water efficiency.”

The Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) has threatened to take legal action against Faisal Al Marzouqi, journalist of the local daily Al Arab for carrying a column which made a number of accusations against it.

Ahmed Al Rumaihi, editor-in-chief of the newspaper said that he had got two letters from the QMA threatening to take the newspaper to court.

But the QMA statement said it was proud of its work. “The QMA is proud of its work and the important contribution it makes to Qatari society and keeps the best interests of the Qatari people first and foremost at all times. The QMA observes the highest level of legal and ethical standards in everything that it does and is subject to regular audit by the State Audit Bureau. The QMA is currently considering all options open to it, including legal action, in response to the recent article written by Faisal Al Marzouqi and published by Al Arab newspaper,” according to the statement.

Al Marzouqi said responding to the report, he would gladly receive legal action since he has all the documents to prove the allegations he has made against the QMA.

“I have enough evidence and there are witnesses as well… However, the QMA would do better to correct their situation before taking legal action.

He said: “If the QMA was serious about its statement, why it didn’t send it out to the media? It was circulated internally to convince their staff that everything was fine.”

“The situation there being extremely bad, my intention was to draw public attention to the problem for rectification. What is worrying about the QMA is that a lobby, and not just a few individuals, is involved in alleged irregularities,” he added.

Al Marzouqi said: “I met the director-general, his assistant, and the heads of human resource and of the tenders division and realized that the situation was beyond redemption.”

Supreme Health Council (SCH) announced on Monday the second case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus in Qatar, with a 29-year-old man infected.

The Qatari patient suffers from asthma and has been in contact with another patient infected with the virus. “He is in a critical condition and is under intensive care,” health authorities said.

Supreme council of health (SCH) announced the first case of Mers virus in Qatar one week ago, with a 59-year-old Qatari man infected.

In June another Qatari national diagnosed with the virus died in a London hospital. The deadly MERS corona virus has killed 47 since September last year. 41 out of them were in Saudi Arabia.

MERS had frequently been referred to as a severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) like virus. An outbreak of SARS in Asia in 2003 caused an eventual 8,273 cases, nine per cent of whom died.

MERS is thought to have jumped from animals to humans like SARS. Latest researches have pointed to the dromedary camels as the source of the MERS coronavirus.

The newly-renovated Jungle Zone theme park in Hyatt Plaza is expected to attract not only residents of Qatar, but also families from GCC and other Middle East countries, mall general manager Feroz Moideen has said.
The entertainment facility has new attractions, amusement centres, play areas and rides for children and adults.
These include The Nest Area, which has rides suitable for children aged 2-5 years. Besides, there are several activities such as arts and crafts, modelling and colouring zone.
Another one is The Valley for those aged 6-12 years. It has rides “ensuring a higher adrenaline rush, including candy bouncers, splash falls and Funcano coasters”.
The theme park also features improved versions of all the rides, which have always been popular among children.
The Tropical, Amazon and Rainforest host parties and family get-togethers and feature juggling and acrobatics, magic shows and face-painting. The party rooms are located at The Tree Top, which contains the latest arcade and redemption games suitable for kids of all ages. Its first indoor 7D theatre offers a unique viewing experience.
Thrill seekers can now challenge themselves with the Sky venture - a 4m-high aerial hanging adventure track.
Designed by renowned international theme park consultants, Jungle Zone conforms to the highest safety standards, according to Moideen. “Beyond the awe-inspiring concept and rides, our team has looked into all the minute details pertaining to safety and security,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the entertainment facility would soon become a tourist attraction in the country and the region.
The theme park will be open from 10am to 10pm on weekdays and from 10am to 11pm on Thursdays. During Fridays, it will operate from 1pm to 11pm.

Hired as drivers, Lankan workers got ‘carpenter’ contracts (no replies)

The case of 16 Sri Lankan workers, allegedly cheated by recruitment agencies back home and subsequently by their employer in Qatar, is a classic example of the fraudulent practices prevalent in the manpower hiring industry.
The plight of the workers, who claimed not to have received basic salaries for over three months, was featured in Gulf Times yesterday.
Documents provided by an aggrieved worker indicate that though he was hired as a light vehicle driver, the employment contract prepared in Qatar lists his occupation as carpenter.
“This is the case of all the other members of our group,” the worker said. The profession of this worker is mentioned as “driver” on his passport as well as in the “employment contract” prepared by the recruitment agency in Sri Lanka.
In an initial “employment contract”, which the workers received during March while they were still in Sri Lanka, the trading and contracting company based in Qatar mentioned the job as light vehicle driver.
“We decided to come to Qatar based on this contract, but once we arrived here and received the ‘employment contract’, we realised that the occupation had been changed to that of carpenter,” the worker recalled.
Though the initial contract mentioned a monthly salary of QR1,000-1,200, the subsequent contract showed only QR1,000.
In the first contract, the general manager of the company has given the undertaking that “I am aware that this contract is part and parcel of job order… and will be submitted to relevant authorities in Qatar and Sri Lanka in case of disputes.”
But the first contract has apparently been superseded by the second one, which is in the stipulated English and Arabic format, and mentions the occupation as carpenter. “When we were hired, we were told that on reaching Doha we would be able to get a licence within a month and get paid on time with benefits,” the worker told Gulf Times. “But now it’s been more than three months and all of us remain unpaid. It’s like we don’t exist any more for the company,” he added.
Gulf Times reported yesterday that the Sri Lankan embassy was “in the process of resolving the matter”.
The workers now live in squalid conditions on their company premises in the Industrial Area.
The situation for the Sri Lankan workers has become complicated by the fact that according to the new rules in the country, all workers on labour visas can no longer dream of getting a driving licence.
As part of an initiative to ease traffic congestion on Qatar’s roads, the Traffic Department had decided not to issue driving licences to certain categories of expatriate workers since the beginning of July.
The licensing section of the Traffic Department in the Ministry of Interior (MoI) had issued a circular to driving schools, informing them of its decision not to issue driving licences to certain type of workers, especially labourers.
According to a recently published Gulf Times report, labourers, however, still constitute one-third of the total number of clients of driving schools. Of 30 applicants, about 10 fall under the labourer category. The ban is on 162 specific categories of workers, mostly those associated with low-income jobs.
